Transferable Concepts

Andy Matuschak shared this pattern from a book on curriculum design, Understanding by Design.

In the book, McTighe and Wiggins provide a table of possibilities when searching for "big ideas" for a given topic.

"Transferable Concepts" allow you to:

  1. Find the "big ideas" for a specific Subject or Topic.
  1. Collect a unique set of lenses for thinking about a subject.
  1. Identify [cross-discipline](On the Cross-Discipline Relevance of Ideas) connections.

Of course, the list above is just a sample. There are many fundamental, universal Concept that can serve as a transferable concepts: Plato's Forms, Adler's Ideas, Alexander's Fifteen Properties, etc.
